Atami Adult Museum, Sex museum in Atami, Japan
The museum sits on a peninsula with views over Sagami Bay and displays erotic wax figures, mirror rooms and mechanical installations across several exhibition halls. The rooms are arranged on different levels and combine representations from Japanese folklore with interactive elements.
The museum opened in 1980 as an entertainment facility with adult-oriented exhibitions. It is today the last museum of its kind in Japan, as most comparable institutions from the period of economic growth have since closed.
The exhibition rooms show figures from the folk tale of Urashima Taro and other stories known in Japan for centuries. This presentation connects old motifs with an interpretation aimed at adults.
Access is via a bus from Atami Station taking about ten minutes, followed by a ropeway ride. The museum opens daily from 9:30 to 17:30 and is located on a hillside above the bay.
The mechanical installations move in slow sequences and combine technical elements with figures from traditional tales. This combination of mechanics and representation was widespread in Japanese entertainment facilities in the 1980s but is rarely found today.
