Japan Sport Olympic Square, Office building in Kasumigaoka, Japan
Japan Sport Olympic Square is an office building with 14 floors above ground and one basement level in the Kasumigaoka neighborhood of Tokyo. The facade is largely glass and fitted with a system of adjustable louvers that control how much light enters the building throughout the day.
The building was completed in April 2019 on the site where the former Kishi Memorial Gymnasium once stood. It was designed to serve as an administrative center for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Japan Olympic Museum on the lower floors displays exhibits about Japanese athletes and their achievements at international competitions. Walking through the museum gives a sense of how deeply sport is woven into everyday life and national identity in Japan.
The building houses the offices of the Japan Sport Association and the Japanese Olympic Committee, so most of the interior is off-limits to the general public. The Olympic Museum on the lower floors is open to visitors and is easy to reach from the main entrance.
Bronze statues of Pierre de Coubertin and Kano Jigoro stand outside the building, honoring the founders of the modern Olympic movement and judo respectively. Nearby, replica Olympic cauldrons from the Tokyo 1964, Sapporo 1972, and Nagano 1998 Games are on display.
