Hakkagō Canal

The Hakkago Canal extends through Nakano with stone-lined channels and traditional water management structures that direct water to agricultural fields.

Built during the Edo period as part of the Tamagawa Josui system in 1653, the canal provided essential water resources to address shortages in the region.

The Hakkago Canal connects to the Tamura Sake Brewery, which has produced sake since 1822 using spring water from the surrounding area.

Walking paths along the canal stretch through Nakano, offering direct access to the Hamura Kyodo Museum and multiple historical water management sites.

During late spring and early summer, fireflies illuminate the canal waters, creating natural light displays among the traditional water structures.
