Shimonoseki City Art Museum

The Shimonoseki City Art Museum is an art museum in Chōfu, Shimonoseki, housing diverse galleries and display spaces. The collection comprises around 2,200 pieces showcasing modern and contemporary paintings from Japan and Western countries.

The museum was founded in 1983 and quickly became an important cultural institution in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It played a significant role in promoting artistic awareness and appreciation throughout the region.

The collection displays works by regional painters such as Kano Hogai and Takashima Hokkai, reflecting the area's artistic heritage. You can see how these artists shaped local creative traditions through their paintings.

The easiest way to reach this museum is by bus from JR Chofu Station, which takes about 15 minutes. The Shiritsu Bijutsukan Mae bus stop is located right at the museum entrance.

Beyond Japanese and Western paintings, the collection also holds ancient Egyptian objects, including a New Kingdom shawabti figure. These unexpected artifacts add a surprising international dimension to the museum.
