National Crafts Museum, National craft museum in Kanazawa, Japan
The National Crafts Museum is a national art and craft museum in Kanazawa, Japan, holding a collection that spans ceramics, glass, lacquerware, woodwork, textiles, metalwork, and graphic design. The works are displayed across two historic buildings that were relocated to this site and carefully restored.
The two buildings that house the museum were originally constructed as military facilities during the Meiji era, one in 1898 and the other in 1909. They were moved from their original locations and converted into gallery spaces when the museum opened in 2020.
The museum focuses on modern and contemporary craft practices, showing how traditional techniques such as lacquerwork and ceramics continue to evolve. Rotating exhibitions let visitors see how Japanese makers work today, not just how they worked in the past.
The museum is easy to reach by bus from Kanazawa Station, and it sits close to other cultural spots in the city. The galleries are laid out in a way that is easy to follow on foot, with clear signs guiding visitors through both buildings.
One room in the museum is a reconstruction of the personal workshop of lacquer artist Matsuda Gonroku, with his original tools and materials left as he used them. It is one of the few places where visitors can see the actual working space of a celebrated Japanese craft master.
