Kaga-Honda Museum, Samurai museum in Hondanomori Park, Kanazawa, Japan
The Kaga-Honda Museum is a museum in Hondanomori Park in Kanazawa displaying military equipment, traditional weapons, and personal belongings of the influential Honda family from feudal Japan. The exhibition presents a collection of armor, swords, and family heirlooms from the Tokugawa period.
The Honda clan was founded by Masashige who fought at the Battle of Sekigahara and maintained political influence throughout the Tokugawa Shogunate period. Their story reflects the evolution of samurai nobility during a more stable and peaceful era.
The collection features elaborately decorated horse equipment with gold inlays and battle armor for horses, reflecting the Honda family's connections to daughters of the Maeda Clan. These objects tell stories of relationships between noble families during the feudal period.
The museum is accessible from Kanazawa Station by taxi in about 15 minutes and sits within a quiet park setting. Plan for around 1 to 2 hours to comfortably explore the collections and surroundings.
The museum houses a specialized spear with an extended blade that required exceptional strength to wield and demonstrates advanced samurai skill. This unusual weapon shows how warriors adapted their techniques to extreme demands.
