Chasuriyama Kofun

Chasuriyama Kofun is a circular burial mound measuring about 90 meters across and standing roughly 18 meters tall. The structure contains two separate burial chambers positioned at different levels within the mound.

This mound dates to the 5th century and served as a burial place for high-ranking individuals in ancient Japanese society. Excavations have revealed extensive remains and objects from that period.

The name comes from a local mountain reference, and the site reveals how high-ranking individuals were buried with precious goods in ancient times. These burial practices tell us much about the social order and values of that era.

The mound is located near Asago and is easy to visit in good weather conditions. To experience it properly, wear comfortable shoes since you can walk around and up the structure to see it from different angles.

In the mid-16th century, local warlords built military fortifications directly on top of this ancient burial mound. These later defensive structures are still visible today, showing how the site was repurposed across different historical periods.
