Grand Katsura of Itoi, Natural monument in Asago, Japan.
The Grand Katsura of Itoi is an enormous magnolia tree growing in a valley near the Itoi River. The trunk measures roughly 20 meters around its widest point and rises about 36 meters tall, composed of around 80 individual shoots that have grown around the decayed original core.
This tree is estimated to be around 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest living specimens in the region. Its distinctive multi-shoot form developed after the original central trunk began to decay centuries ago.
Local stories call this the robed tree, referring to a priest who once hung his clothes here while praying for rain. The tale shows how deeply the community has connected this place to spiritual practice over generations.
A well-maintained trail of about 600 meters leads through the valley to the tree, with benches placed along the path for rest. Restroom facilities are available nearby, and the location sits close to Mount Higashi-tokonoo, making it an accessible destination.
The tree's root system includes one remarkable root that extends about 10 meters downstream into the river. This root appears to seek out cooler water sources, demonstrating how actively the living system of this ancient specimen continues to adapt and grow.
