Meijikan

Meijikan is a Western-style museum building in Izushi that blends Japanese and European architectural approaches across its two floors. The structure displays design elements typical of Japan's rapid modernization period in the late 1800s.

The building was constructed in 1887 as a county office near the Taniyama River and later relocated to its present location. After reconstruction at the new site, it opened as a museum in 1984.

The building displays the work of notable regional figures whose contributions shaped the nation's direction. Visitors can see how local communities participated in broader historical transformations.

The building is open on most weekdays and can be visited without special arrangements. The rooms are walkable and generally accessible throughout.

At the back of the building, one room preserves the original furnishings and layout from the Meiji period administration office. Visitors see how this space was arranged and furnished, offering a direct glimpse into office life of that era.
