Sumiyoshi-jinja, shrine in Aoba, Yokohama
Sumiyoshi-jinja is a small Shinto shrine located in Nara-cho, Aoba-ku, surrounded by tall trees and lush vegetation. The grounds feature simple wooden buildings, stone lanterns, and several smaller shrines accessible by stone steps and pathways that wind through the natural setting.
The shrine was founded in 1772 by a local landowner named Ishimaru Fuji-zō to protect the community. Since then, it has remained a place of continuous worship and care by successive generations of residents who have maintained and preserved it.
The shrine has been a gathering place for neighbors for over 250 years, where people come to pray together and celebrate seasonal festivals. The annual September festival brings the community together with traditional music and food, showing how local residents still value their shared customs and beliefs.
The shrine is easy to reach by taking the Kodomo no Kuni train line and walking about nine minutes on foot. The pathways inside are well-marked with stone steps and paved routes, making it simple to explore the entire grounds.
The shrine is dedicated to a rare Shinto deity called Takeichinusu-no-mikoto, who is connected to the sea and safe sailing. This makes it a unique place where visitors can seek protection and blessing for their endeavors and journeys.
