Suwa Shrine, Shinto shrine in Fukaya, Japan

Suwa Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Fukaya, Japan, dedicated to Takeminakata-no-Mikoto, a deity associated with wind, water, and farming. The grounds include wooden buildings with curved roofs, stone lanterns, and a path leading up to the main hall.

Suwa shrines spread across Japan from their original site at Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture. The Fukaya branch, like many others, was supported by local merchants and leaders, and has served the surrounding villages for many generations.

Visitors can buy amulets and good luck charms at a small shop on the grounds, and the selection changes with the seasons. During local festivals, portable shrines called mikoshi are carried through the streets, drawing people from the surrounding area together.

The shrine is located in central Fukaya and can be reached on foot from the train station. Spring and autumn are good times to visit, as the surrounding trees bring changing colors to the grounds.

Many visitors collect goshuin, red ink stamps given as a record of the visit, which sometimes feature seasonal designs. These stamps are kept in special notebooks that some people carry with them for years, building a personal record of their travels to shrines across Japan.
