Place of Saigō Takamori's Death

The stone stele commemorates the exact location where Saigo Takamori, a central figure of Japanese modernization, met his end in 1877.

After sustaining bullet wounds during the final battle of Seinan Civil War, Saigo Takamori performed ritual suicide with assistance from his follower Beppu Shinsuke.

The monument represents the transition period between feudal Japan and the modern era, marking the end of traditional samurai influence.

The memorial site is accessible via a 10-minute walk from Saigo's Hideout Cave or through the Kagoshima City View Bus, which stops at Satsuma Gishihi Mae.

Military leader Yamagata Aritomo declared Saigo Takamori a true hero, despite commanding the opposing forces during the final conflict.
