Jōkōmyō-ji

Jōkōmyō-ji, Buddhist temple in Kamitatsuo-chō, Japan.

Jokomy-ji is a Buddhist temple in Kamitatsuo-cho housing several buildings for religious purposes, including the Miedo Hall and Amidado Hall. The site is surrounded by two gardens that invite exploration and quiet reflection.

The temple arose in the 12th century through the work of Honen, who spread Buddhist practices that made teachings accessible to ordinary people. This movement reshaped how spiritual practices were understood and experienced across the region.

The grounds feature two distinct gardens reflecting different periods in Japanese landscaping design. Visitors can observe how each garden reveals particular approaches to how spaces should be arranged and enjoyed.

The main buildings are free to enter, while the gardens require a small fee and operate during set times. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the grounds include various paths with different surfaces throughout.

From the 17th to 19th centuries, this temple housed one of the world's largest bells, reflecting its historical importance. That bell remains central to religious ceremonies today, connecting past practice with present-day worship.
