Xaisomboun Province, Administrative province in central Laos
Xaisomboun is a mountainous province in central Laos organized into five administrative districts. The region contains notable mining operations and sits at the crossroads of several natural ridges and valleys.
The province was established in 2013 after the territory had functioned under special military administration for several years. This transition marked a shift toward regular provincial status within the national system.
Several ethnic groups live in this region and maintain traditional crafts like textile weaving and rice-based spirits. These skills are visible in local communities and passed down through generations.
The terrain is mountainous and requires visitors to prepare for varying weather conditions at different elevations. The dry season offers the easiest access for traveling through the region.
The country's highest mountain stands within its borders and creates an extreme environment with very cold temperatures at its summit. This peak is geographically important to Laos and rarely reached by visitors.
