Sannine Formation, Limestone formation in Mount Lebanon mountain range, Lebanon.
The Sannine Formation is a limestone feature in Mount Lebanon made of layered fine sediments stacked on top of each other. These layers formed in shallow seas during the Late Cretaceous and show how the Mediterranean region was once covered by ocean.
This formation developed about 100 to 94 million years ago when this area lay beneath a shallow sea. It shows how the land and water changed during that time period.
Scientists from various countries study this formation to understand the evolution of marine life and geological processes in the Mediterranean region.
The formation can be studied at three main locations: Haqel, Hjoula, and Nammoura, each showing different types of fossils. Visitors should expect rough ground and wear sturdy footwear.
The layers preserve fossils of fish, flying reptiles, and sea creatures in unusually good condition. This preservation lets researchers see details that are normally lost.
