Temple of the Obelisks

The Temple of the Obelisks is an ancient sanctuary in Byblos featuring more than two dozen standing stone blocks of varying heights that form the central feature of the site. The ruins show different building phases from different periods stacked on top of one another.

The site served as a religious center for many centuries and shows remains from the Bronze Age along with even older structures beneath. French archaeologists systematically examined the location in the 20th century to uncover its historical layers.

This was a significant place where ancient inhabitants performed religious ceremonies, as shown by numerous figurines and ritual objects discovered during excavations. The collection of finds offers insight into how people here honored their gods and what role this location held in their daily spiritual life.

Beneath the obelisks, thousands of small religious objects were discovered that show people left personal offerings in this space. This practice of leaving sacred items was a central part of worship rituals across generations.
