Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit, Vilnius, Eastern Orthodox church in Old Town, Lithuania
The Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit is a Baroque church in the Old Town of Vilnius with a 49-meter-high tower displaying traditional Byzantine design elements. Inside, an ornate iconostasis with gold filigree work and the preserved remains of three 14th-century martyrs create a sacred space for worship.
A wooden church was first built on the site in 1567, but fire later destroyed the structure. The brick building that stands today was reconstructed between 1749 and 1753 under architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz.
The church serves as the spiritual center for the Orthodox community in Vilnius, where regular services and prayers take place. Visitors can observe the traditional icons and religious practices that continue to define its role today.
The church is located in the Old Town and easily reachable on foot; note that active services take place and visitors should dress and behave respectfully. Plan your visit outside peak prayer times to explore the architecture and interior at your own pace.
The church connects to two functioning monasteries, one for monks and one for nuns, which are the only active religious communities of their kind in Lithuania. This relationship makes the site a rare center for monastic life in the country.
