Church and monastery of the Holy Trinity, Vilnius
Church and monastery of the Holy Trinity, Vilnius, Eastern Orthodox church and monastery in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The Church and Monastery of the Holy Trinity is an Eastern Orthodox complex in Vilnius featuring Belarusian Gothic design with pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and four corner towers. The ensemble includes a university, accommodation facilities, and monastic cells accessible to visitors year-round.
The stone building was constructed in 1514 by Grand Hetman Konstanty Ostrogski following a military victory against Muscovite forces. The founding was directly tied to a significant conflict between the regional powers.
The monastery houses multiple chapels funded by noble families, with marble gravestones created by Italian craftsmen displaying the names of those buried within.
The monastery welcomes visitors year-round without major restrictions on access. It is best to enter the spaces respectfully, as active monastic communities continue to live and worship there.
The complex once served as a prison where Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz was held for his involvement in independence movements. This unexpected use demonstrates how the site's purpose shifted dramatically over time.
