Subačius Gate, Medieval city gate ruins in Old Town, Lithuania.
Subačius Gate is a medieval fortification in Old Town Vilnius where only stone foundations and fragments from the original structure remain visible. The ruins sit at the convergence of Subačius and Markučių streets, marking what was once a principal entrance to the city's southeastern quarter.
The gate was built in 1528 and underwent major changes during the 1600s before Russian authorities tore it down in 1801. Its fate reflects how the city experienced shifting control over the centuries.
The gate once served as a daily passage for travelers and merchants heading eastward from the city. People moving between Vilnius and distant lands would have passed through this very point regularly.
The location sits at a street corner that is easy to reach on foot while walking through Old Town. The remains are modest in size and take little time to view, but they offer a sense of the city's medieval fortification system.
Stone from the demolished structure was not wasted but reused in new buildings such as military barracks and merchant houses built afterward. This practical recycling of material shows how valuable building resources were in the city.
