Nicholas Gate

The Nicholas Gate is the main entrance to Daugavpils Fortress, built from stone with thick walls and defensive positions throughout. The structure displays typical early 19th-century military design with visible gun ports and reinforced sections.

The gate was built in the early 1800s when the Russian Army fortified the fortress against potential French invasions. It marks a turning point in the region's military history by making Daugavpils a key strategic defensive position.

The gate is named after the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, under whose rule the fortress was constructed. At this entrance, visitors can see how Russian military architecture became part of Daugavpils' local identity.

The gate is open daily, and visitors can enter the fortress complex through this main entrance. Guided tours are available at the Culture and Information Centre within the grounds to help understand the history and architecture.

The gate received recognition as Latvia's best-restored architectural object in 2014, highlighting the quality of modern conservation work. This award shows that despite its age, the structure is preserved in excellent condition today.
