Engineering Arsenal, Military engineering center in Daugavpils, Latvia
The Engineering Arsenal is a two-story building in Daugavpils housing a large collection of cars and motorcycles spread across multiple exhibition areas. The spaces contain restored vehicles, historical equipment, and displays showing what different workshops once produced here.
The structure was designed by architect Alexander Shtaubert and built between 1840 and 1845 as part of the Daugavpils Fortress military complex. It originally served military engineering functions before being repurposed for storage and eventually converted into a museum space.
The building reflects how the region developed through industry and technology over time, telling the story of skilled craftsmanship that once happened here daily. Walking through the spaces, you see where different trades were practiced and mastered.
The building is open Wednesday through Sunday with guided tours available in multiple languages and the option to explore the exhibition at your own pace. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since visiting involves moving through several exhibition spaces and workshop areas.
The building preserves the original workshop spaces where specialized craftspeople such as blacksmiths, carpenters, and pattern makers worked on complex assignments for the fortress. These craft areas often receive less attention than the vehicle collection but reveal the everyday work that kept the fortification functioning.
