Cietoksnis, Military fortification in Daugavpils, Latvia
Cietoksnis is a military fortress in Daugavpils featuring ramparts with bastions, ravelins, counterguards, and a surrounding moat. The complex covers an extensive area with multiple defensive structures and fortification buildings arranged across the site.
Construction began in 1810 as a defense against Napoleon's armies and continued under Russian imperial control until 1878. The extended building period shows how the site evolved into one of the 19th century's major fortress complexes.
The Arsenal building within the fortress has been converted into an art center that shows contemporary works. This transformation brings creative life into a structure built for war.
The fortress lies about 2 kilometers (1 mile) east of downtown and is accessible by bus from the city center. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the grounds are extensive and terrain varies across the site.
The fortress retains roughly 85 percent of its original early 19th-century construction. This makes it the last preserved bastion-type fort of its era in Northern Europe and an uncommon example of military design from that period.
