Rēzekne Castle, Medieval castle ruins on Castle Hill in Rēzekne, Latvia.
Rēzekne Castle is a medieval fortification on a hilltop in the center of Rēzekne, Latvia, classified as a national architectural monument. Stone wall fragments and building foundations remain visible on the hill, giving a clear sense of the original layout of the stronghold.
The Livonian Order built the castle in 1285 as a military post to guard the region against threats from the east and south. Over the following centuries, the structure was repeatedly damaged and eventually abandoned, leaving the ruins that stand today.
The hill on which the castle stood gave the city of Rēzekne its name, tracing back to an old personal name from the region. Locals often walk up the hill in the evening, and the site feels like a quiet gathering point rather than a tourist stop.
The site is on a hill a short walk from the city center, and the path leading up is easy to follow on foot. Information panels on-site explain what each remaining wall and foundation once belonged to.
A clay sculpture of Princess Rose, made by local potters, stands at the base of the hill and refers to a legendary figure from Latgalian folklore. Next to it, a scale model shows what the castle is believed to have looked like before it fell into ruin.
