Rēzekne Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Cathedral, Gothic Revival cathedral in Rēzekne, Latvia
Rēzekne Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral is a red brick church with two symmetrical towers in Gothic style. The interior features five wooden altars with carved sculptures of religious figures including the Virgin Mary and Saint Theresa.
The cathedral was built starting in 1888 following a fire that destroyed the wooden church in 1887. Engineer F. Viganovsky from Riga oversaw the construction, which marked a period of religious renewal in the city.
The cathedral serves as a gathering place for the local Catholic community and remains central to religious observances in the region. Visitors can see how the five wooden altars and sacred sculptures are used for daily prayer and seasonal celebrations.
The building is open to visitors during daylight hours and the interior can be viewed freely. It is best to visit at a time that does not coincide with religious services and to dress respectfully.
The stained glass windows in the main altar depict the first bishops of Livonia, including Saint Maynard and Saint Albert. Few visitors notice these windows, which hold significant regional church history within their colored glass.
