RAF Krendi, Former Royal Air Force base in Qrendi, Malta
RAF Krendi was a military airfield near Qrendi with multiple runways and a control tower. Today the site remains partially accessible, with one former runway now serving as a road toward the Blue Grotto.
The Royal Air Force established this base in 1941 as an alternate airfield during World War II. The station provided crucial support to Mediterranean operations as a diversion landing strip.
The airfield witnessed the deployment of 229 Squadron and other fighter units equipped with Spitfire aircraft throughout the Mediterranean campaign.
The airfield remains visible from outside, with some areas accessible on foot for exploration. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain when walking the grounds.
Before becoming fully operational, RAF Krendi employed strategic deception by activating runway lights to divert enemy bombers from other military installations.
