Laferla Cross, Religious building in Siggiewi, Malta
The Laferla Cross stands 16 meters tall on a limestone pedestal atop Gholja tas-Salib hill, commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The structure is made of bronze and iron, mounted on a solid base that has weathered decades of exposure on the hilltop.
Built in 1903 under the supervision of Ganni Mercieca, the cross underwent major reconstruction in 1963 with bronze and iron materials following structural damage. This restoration ensured the monument could endure as a landmark for generations to come.
The cross serves as a focal point for pilgrims during Easter, when many climb the hill for religious observances and prayers. This practice continues today, connecting visitors to long-standing spiritual traditions in the region.
A designated path leads from Siggiewi to the cross, taking about 15 minutes on foot through the Girgenti vineyards. The climb is moderate, though visitors should wear proper footwear and bring water, especially on warmer days.
The limestone pedestal houses a small chapel that opens only during Easter, containing three religious paintings inside. One of these works features a striking depiction of the Virgin Mary that draws particular attention from many visitors.
