Church of St Nicholas, Siġġiewi, Baroque parish church in Siġġiewi, Malta
The Church of St Nicholas is a baroque parish church featuring a central dome, side aisles, and a portico designed by Lorenzo Gafà from 1675 to 1693. The interior holds a large painting and a wooden processional statue from the 18th century.
The current structure replaced an older 15th-century parish church and was consecrated in 1729. It underwent expansions and modifications by architect Nikol Zammit in 1862.
The interior displays works by local artists and reflects how Saint Nicholas holds deep meaning for the community. Visitors can observe how the church serves as the center of local celebrations, especially during the annual feast.
The church is open to visitors during regular hours and offers good views of the architecture and interior artworks. It is best to dress respectfully, as it remains an active place of religious worship.
A stone statue from the 18th century stands in the church square with a Latin inscription asking the saint to protect the surrounding fields. This statue shows the historical connection between the church and the protection of the rural community.
