De Rohan Gate, Triumphal arch in Zebbug, Malta.
De Rohan Gate is a neoclassical triumphal arch built from limestone in Zebbug with distinctive rusticated features. Doric pilasters set on a plain base support the structure, which culminates in a triangular pediment with moulded edges.
Local stonemason Giuseppe Xerri designed this arch and completed it in 1798. The structure emerged during a period of major transformation on the island, marking the conclusion of one era before French forces arrived.
Above the arch sits a niche holding a painted depiction of Ecce Homo in red and white tones. This religious artwork reflects how these city gates served as places where spiritual themes were displayed to the community.
The gate is located at a central point in Zebbug and is easy to spot. Vehicle traffic is restricted around the monument to protect it, so approach on foot for the best view.
This monument stands as one of the final major architectural statements made by the Hospitallers in Malta before a new era began. This particular timing gives it special weight as a witness to the shift between two distinct periods of island history.
