Casino Notabile, Architectural landmark at Saqqajja Hill, Mdina, Malta.
Casino Notabile sits outside the city walls of Mdina and was constructed from local limestone stone. The structure includes three interior rooms, an open terrace, and a covered front porch with a carefully designed facade.
Construction took place between 1887 and 1888, replacing an 18th-century laundry house where local women washed their clothes. This transformation marked the shift from an ordinary working space to a place for the upper class.
The building served as a social meeting place for the nobility of Mdina, reflecting how the wealthy spent their leisure time in the late 1800s. Walking past it today, you can still sense its role as a place where affluent residents gathered together.
The building sits on a hillside location, so be prepared for some walking uphill and wear comfortable shoes. It was thoroughly restored in 2016 and can be viewed well from the outside.
The front facade features detailed stone carvings created by Sicilian sculptor Giuseppe Valenti, including a portrait bust of the Governor. These intricate details are easy to miss but reward a closer look.
