The building was founded in 1417 by nobleman Francesco Gatto and rebuilt in 1694 following severe damage from an earthquake. This reconstruction reflects how the city recovered from that natural disaster.
The chapel displays a painting by Giuseppe D'Arena showing Saint Agatha with Saint Adrian. This image reflects the religious devotion that visitors can sense while walking through Mdina's streets.
The chapel sits within Mdina's narrow streets and is accessible on foot from many other historical sites. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the cobbled streets can be uneven and steep in places.
During the 1551 siege of Mdina, local leaders organized a procession displaying Saint Agatha's image. This religious demonstration reportedly influenced the attacking forces to abandon their plans.
