Annunciation Church

The Annunciation Church is a baroque house of worship in Mdina's old town featuring an elliptical floor plan and richly decorated interior. The walls and ceiling are filled with paintings, sculptures, and ornately carved wooden elements created by artists such as Mattia Preti and Stefano Erardi.

A French military engineer designed the church, whose construction began between 1660 and 1675 on the site of an older house of worship. After the 1693 earthquake damaged the Cathedral, it temporarily took on its role until the new Cathedral was consecrated again in 1702.

The church interior displays artworks created by local and Italian masters that reflect baroque piety and devotion. The community uses the space daily for prayers and services, giving the place an active spiritual role in the neighborhood.

The house of worship sits on Villegaignon Street in central Mdina and is open to visitors. Daily prayers and services take place here, which is worth keeping in mind when planning a visit.

The church preserves an ornately carved wooden frame created by local artist Pietro Paolo Troisi and a processional statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel by Andrea Imbroll. These two pieces rank among the building's most precious artistic treasures and are especially venerated during celebrations.
