Mdina Gate, Baroque gateway in Mdina, Malta
Mdina Gate is the primary entrance to the fortified city, featuring double pilasters, coats of arms, and an arched stone passage. The structure is decorated with lion statues that display the baroque architectural style of its construction.
The gate was built in 1724 by architect Charles François de Mondion and replaced the earlier multi-gate medieval system with separate courtyards. This change streamlined access to the city and modernized the fortification.
The inner side displays relief sculptures representing three patron saints of Malta, highlighting their significance to the island. Visitors can study these figures as they pass through the entrance area.
The gate stands near Rabat bus station and provides direct access to the old city through its main entrance. Visitors should expect steep cobblestone streets inside and wear sturdy footwear for comfortable walking.
The structure was used as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones, appearing as one of the gates of King's Landing. This role brought worldwide attention to the baroque entrance and its architecture.
