Greek's Gate, Medieval gate in Mdina, Malta
Greek's Gate comprises two vaulted passages where the inner section displays medieval characteristics and the outer portal shows Baroque design. This layered structure reveals how the fortifications protected the city at different depths.
The gate originated during medieval times as part of the city's defensive structure. In 1724, architect Charles François de Mondion redesigned its exterior portal in Baroque style, creating the appearance seen today.
The gate takes its name from the Greek community that once lived nearby and shaped the area's character. It served as a key passage for people entering the fortified city.
The gate sits at the southwest corner of Mdina and serves as one of the two main entrances to the fortified city. It connects directly to Piazza dei Greci, making it easy to get oriented once you arrive.
The inner portal retains its original pointed arch from medieval times, preserving the original construction beneath layers of later modifications. This makes it a rare surviving example of Mdina's original medieval fortifications that were mostly altered or replaced over centuries.
