Scheres Castle, Medieval château in Baarlo, Netherlands
Scheres Castle is a stone château in Baarlo set along Napoleonsbaan Zuid, displaying architectural features typical of Dutch noble residences from the 18th century. The structure retains its period design with characteristic stonework and classical proportions.
The Scheres family established their presence on this estate in 1500, creating the foundations of what would become a significant property. In the late 1700s, Baron d'Olne rebuilt and restructured the site to transform it into the castle visible today.
Japanese-American sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri transformed the castle into his studio and residence from 1962 until 2009, attracting artists to the area. His work and presence shaped how people understood the property as a creative space rather than simply a noble dwelling.
The castle functions as a private residence and is typically not open to the public for viewing inside. Visitors can appreciate the exterior from Napoleonsbaan Zuid and observe the building and surroundings from the street.
The property changed hands at least six times throughout its history, with each family leaving its own mark on the place. This varied ownership history is visible today in the different architectural phases and modifications to the structure.
