Castle De Raay

Castle De Raay is a castle in Baarlo with a square white-painted main building topped by a Swiss chalet style roof, constructed around 1875 atop medieval cellars. Today the property operates as a hotel-restaurant complex hosting events and gatherings.

First documented in 1236 as property of Tilman van Raay, the castle evolved from a Frankish water fortress into a noble residence. Its defining transformation to its current appearance occurred in the mid 1800s.

The grounds house an art center with replica workshops and silk-screen printing facilities where visitors can see creative work in progress. This space blends the castle's heritage with contemporary artistic practices.

The castle is located at Napoleonsbaan Zuid 26 in Baarlo and is best reached by car or on foot from the town center. As it operates as a hotel and restaurant, visitors can explore the grounds while dining or attending special events.

During an early 2000s renovation, portions of the building were encased in glass, allowing the original medieval stone walls beneath to remain visible. This approach demonstrates how modern respect for history can be expressed thoughtfully.
