Castle d'Erp, Medieval castle in Peel en Maas, Netherlands.
Castle d'Erp is a residential castle in Peel en Maas consisting of three wings arranged around a rectangular courtyard in the center. The structure displays architectural features from both the medieval period and later restoration works that reshaped its appearance.
The castle was built in 1350 and passed through many hands over the centuries, including the Van Montfort family starting in 1388 and the Van Eyll family from 1501 onward. Each family brought changes that affected both the structure and its function.
The castle functions as a private residence and carries the mark of multiple families who shaped its spaces over time. Walking around its exterior, you notice how a fortress gradually became a home, with defensive walls giving way to larger windows and more comfortable quarters.
The castle is privately owned and interior visits require advance permission from the owners. The exterior and grounds can be observed from public pathways and surrounding areas.
During 1970s renovation work, a section of the gate tower unexpectedly collapsed due to structural problems hidden within the walls from previous centuries. This incident revealed how fragile parts of the building had become after centuries of changes.
