Nederlands Watermuseum

The Nederlands Watermuseum is an educational facility located below ground level in Sonsbeek Park, featuring over 50 interactive exhibits about water. Visitors encounter working models of locks, pumping stations, and flood defense systems that demonstrate how these structures actually function.

The building began as an 18th century mill called Begijnenmolen that processed grain for the community. It underwent major renovation from 2002 to 2003 to become this museum dedicated to water management.

The museum explains how Dutch society has learned to live with water and shape the landscape around it. Visitors see demonstrations of techniques for managing water that remain essential to daily life in the Netherlands today.

The museum is easily accessible and comfortable walking shoes help for navigating the underground spaces. Plan to spend enough time engaging with the interactive exhibits, as many experiments invite hands-on participation.

The Water Lab area allows visitors to conduct their own water experiments and directly observe the results. During summer months an outdoor water play area becomes available where children discover these concepts through hands-on play.
