Sonsbeek Park, Urban park in Arnhem, Netherlands
Sonsbeek Park is a 67-hectare green space in Arnhem featuring century-old beech forests, multiple ponds, fountains, two waterfalls, and rolling hills near the city center. The grounds form a connected network of different landscape sections that gradually reveal themselves as you explore.
A baron purchased the estate in 1821 and transformed it into an English landscape garden, though financial difficulties later led to land sales. This formative period shaped the park's appearance today.
The park hosts the renowned Sonsbeek sculpture exhibitions during summer months, displaying contemporary art installations throughout the green spaces. These exhibitions draw art enthusiasts who encounter modern works naturally during their walks through the grounds.
The park is within walking distance from Arnhem Central Station, making it easy to arrive and explore at a relaxed pace through different areas. Clear paths connect all main sections, so visitors can navigate comfortably without losing their way.
A white water mill remains the only functioning mill from ten historical mills that once operated along the Sint-Jansbeek stream. Today it stands as a quiet reminder of this technical heritage.
