Jaworki, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Mountain village in Lesser Poland, Poland
Jaworki is a village in Lesser Poland, located south of Szczawnica in a valley surrounded by the Carpathian mountains. Two streams run through the area, shaping the terrain and dividing the valley into distinct natural sections.
The village sits at the western edge of traditional Lemko territory, a Carpathian region with its own language and building traditions. After the forced resettlement of Lemko people following World War II, the area was largely depopulated for decades.
The settlement marks the western edge of traditional Lemko territory, a distinct Carpathian region with its own cultural identity. Local traditions reflect connections across Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine that remain visible in daily life.
Jaworki is reached by regional road from Szczawnica and serves as a starting point for hikes into the Pieniny and Beskid ranges. The terrain is hilly throughout, so sturdy footwear is a good idea even for short walks away from the road.
The two streams flowing through the valley are called Biala Woda and Czarna Woda, meaning White Water and Black Water. The names refer to a real difference in water color caused by the different riverbeds and flow speeds of each stream.
