Lighthouse in Sopot, Maritime navigation tower in Sopot, Poland
The Lighthouse in Sopot is a white square tower with a pyramidal roof, standing on the Baltic coast next to the city's long wooden pier. From its observation platform at 33 meters, you can see across Gdansk Bay and the surrounding shoreline.
The tower was built in 1904 as a chimney for a health center that stood nearby, with no connection to navigation at the time. It was only in 1977 that it was converted into a working lighthouse equipped with navigation lights.
The tower stands right next to the beach and the wooden pier, making it easy to spot from the waterfront. Visitors often use it as a meeting point before walking along the shore.
Reaching the observation platform means climbing 136 steps, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. The tower is easy to find near the pier entrance, and the surrounding beach area offers a pleasant place to rest before or after the climb.
For more than 70 years, the tower had nothing to do with the sea or navigation, functioning simply as an industrial chimney. This surprises many visitors who assume it was always a lighthouse.
