Basilica of the Dominican Friars in Lublin

Basilica of the Dominican Friars in Lublin, Gothic basilica in Old Town, Poland

Description

The Dominican Basilica is a hall church with two side aisles, Corinthian pilasters, and barrel vaults with lunettes running through the nave. The complex holds a painting gallery, monastery buildings, a treasury, and eleven decorated chapels arranged throughout the structure.

History

King Casimir the Great founded the church and monastery in 1342, incorporating an existing oratory of the Holy Cross and a tower from 1288. The site later became a setting for significant political gatherings.

Culture

The place carries a European Heritage Label because of its connection to the 1569 Union of Lublin, a major political agreement where King Sigismund August attended a thanksgiving service. This role made it important for the region's history.

Practical

The site is open to visitors who can explore the various areas including chapels, artworks, and monastery spaces. The best time to visit depends on opening hours and religious observances on the calendar.

Did you know?

The monastery treasury holds an oval wooden table that historically served as the signing place for the Union of Lublin document. This table is a rare surviving witness to an event that shaped Polish history.
