Teatr Stary, Historical theatre in Lublin, Poland
Teatr Stary is a theatre in central Lublin, Poland, with two separate performance spaces: a main stage and a smaller chamber stage. Both run shows on a regular basis throughout the year, covering a range of formats and styles.
The theatre was founded in 1781, when Mateusz Witkowski received permission from the Krakow magistrate to stage comedies for a monthly fee. What began as a modest arrangement eventually became a permanent house, still operating on the same ground today.
The name "Stary" simply means "old" in Polish, pointing to the long presence of the house in the city. Its stages host both Polish classics and works by living writers, giving the place a broad role in the life of the city.
The theatre is easy to reach on foot from central Lublin. The box office sells tickets directly, and the building is set up to welcome visitors with mobility needs.
Since 2021, the house has worked with European cultural organizations and taken part in international arts projects. This brings visiting productions from other countries to Lublin on a regular basis, adding an international dimension to its local season.
