Partisan Monument in Warsaw, Bronze monument at Smolna Street corner, Warsaw, Poland
The Partisan Monument in Warsaw is a bronze sculpture on a granite base depicting a wounded fighter supported by a woman holding an olive branch. The composition, standing about 3.2 meters tall, is located at the corner of Smolna Street and Aleje Jerozolimskie.
The monument was unveiled on May 13, 1962, commemorating two decades since the founding march of the People's Guard under Franciszek Zubrzycki's leadership. The inscription and placement marked this significant anniversary in Poland's modern history.
The sculpture references classical religious art through its emotional composition showing suffering and compassion in a moment of human vulnerability.
The monument sits at a central intersection that is easy to reach on foot and visible from multiple directions. The location near major streets makes it accessible without requiring special travel arrangements.
The granite base of the sculpture was salvaged from a demolished mausoleum that had been built during the Third Reich period. This reuse of material gives the monument an additional layer of meaning by transforming a relic from a dark chapter into a tribute to resistance.
