Greetings from Jerusalem Avenue, Art installation at Charles de Gaulle Roundabout, Warsaw, Poland.
Greetings from Jerusalem Avenue is an installation made from plastic and natural materials at the Charles de Gaulle Roundabout in Warsaw, Poland. The construction rises about 50 feet (15 meters) above ground level and presents the form of a date palm at the center of the circle.
Artist Joanna Rajkowska completed the installation in December 2002 after returning from Israel and developing a concept for the avenue. The work was initially planned as a temporary exhibition, but three-quarters of Warsaw residents voted to keep it as a permanent feature.
The structure stands where the avenue recalls New Jerusalem, a district founded by Jewish settlers who arrived during the late 18th century. People now use it as a meeting point and orientation marker when navigating this part of the city.
The construction remains accessible around the clock, though it sits in the center of a busy roundabout and can only be viewed from a distance. Maintenance work on the steel frame and foliage takes place regularly to ensure the longevity of the materials.
The installation has become a recognizable symbol of the city even though it started as a temporary project and often sparked debates about urban art. Some of the foliage actually comes from real palms and must be replaced regularly to maintain the green appearance.
