Saint John of Nepomuk church in Zwierzyniec, Baroque church on an island in Zwierzyniec, Poland
Saint John of Nepomuk church in Zwierzyniec is a Baroque brick building situated on an island and reached from the mainland by a bridge. The structure features two side chapels, an oak main altar, and a triangular pediment displaying the founders' coats of arms.
The building was constructed between 1741 and 1747 by Tomasz Zamoyski and Teresa Michowska and served as a chapel for the Zamoyski family within their palace complex. This creation period reflects the era of prosperous rural nobility in the region.
The interior displays paintings by Polish artist Łukasz Smuglewicz, including the Coronation of Our Lady in the Chapel of Our Lady. These works shape how the church space looks and reflect the artistic quality invested in its decoration.
The church sits on an island accessible by a reinforced concrete bridge that was restored to its historical appearance in 2014. Visitors should expect that island access might be difficult depending on weather or water conditions.
During May, a boat procession circles the church on the feast day of Saint John of Nepomuk, marking the saint's martyrdom in the Vltava River. This annual event connects local custom with the history of the church's patron.
