Saint John the Baptist church in Dobczyce, Classical church in Dobczyce, Poland.
Saint John the Baptist Church is a classical structure with a single-nave design and a three-sided choir topped by a western tower built from stones of the nearby castle. The building sits on a hillside above the cemetery within medieval town walls.
The current structure was built between 1828 and 1834 by builder Jan Turnau, replacing an earlier stone temple from the early 16th century that was financed by Sebastian Lubomirski. This reconstruction represented a shift toward classical architecture.
The interior displays five wooden altars created in 1851 with detailed Passion scenes carved into the wood. A Renaissance marble epitaph from 1594 commemorates a noble burial and connects the church to its earlier centuries.
The terrain is hilly with steps leading to the entrance, so comfortable shoes are recommended for a visit. Access is available during service times, and the surrounding area with the cemetery and town walls offers a peaceful setting for exploration.
Adjacent to the church stands a three-arch bell tower holding a Gothic bell from 1504, one of the oldest functioning bells in the region. Two additional modern bells cast in 1975 in Przemysl complement this historical instrument.
