Al Kamandjâti, Music education organization in Ramallah, Palestine and Angers, France
Al Kamandjati is a music school based in Ramallah and Angers that teaches children across the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Southern Lebanon. Students learn different instruments and perform in orchestras that tour throughout Palestine and Europe.
The organization started in 2002 in France, founded by violist Ramzi Aburedwan following his experiences during the first Intifada near Ramallah. This beginning set the path for using music as a way to support children living in conflict areas.
The orchestras here blend Arabic melodies with European classical pieces in their performances. This combination shows how music can bring people from different traditions together.
Visitors can attend performances at both locations and experience the range of instruments and presentations on offer. The best time to visit is during concert seasons when performances take place at different venues.
The school earned the Prince Claus Award in 2006 for its work opening new perspectives to children in conflict zones through music. This recognition shows how effective an artistic approach can be in supporting young people facing difficult circumstances.
