Mausoleum of Yasser Arafat, Mausoleum and museum in Ramallah, West Bank

The Mausoleum of Yasser Arafat is a memorial complex and museum in Ramallah, in the West Bank, dedicated to the former Palestinian leader. It includes a cubic tomb set over a reflecting pool, a prayer pavilion, landscaped gardens, and an interior space with photographs, documents, and personal objects from Arafat's life.

Yasser Arafat died in November 2004 in Paris and was initially buried in a temporary grave at the Muqata'a compound in Ramallah. The permanent mausoleum was designed by architect Jafar Tukan in 2005 and completed in 2007, replacing the temporary structure with the current building.

The mausoleum stands on the grounds of the Muqata'a, the former headquarters of the Palestinian Authority. In front of the tomb, a square displays flags from countries that recognize Palestine, giving the site a clear political symbolism that visitors can see directly.

The site is easy to reach on foot or by local taxi from the center of Ramallah. Visitors should dress neatly and speak quietly, as the space is treated with respect; photography is allowed but it is best to follow any instructions from staff on site.

Arafat's original wish was to be buried in East Jerusalem, but the Israeli government did not agree, which is why he was laid to rest in Ramallah instead. His face appears on murals, posters, and everyday objects across Palestine, making his image a constant presence in public spaces long after his death.
