The Palestinian Museum, Art museum in Birzeit, Palestine.
The Palestinian Museum is an art museum set on a hillside near the town of Birzeit in the West Bank, housed in a building made of pale local limestone. The site brings together indoor gallery spaces and terraced outdoor areas that surround the main structure.
The museum was designed by an Irish architecture firm and opened in 2016 after years of planning and development. It was the first building in Palestine to receive a sustainable construction certification.
The museum displays everyday objects, textiles, and artworks that are directly tied to Palestinian daily life and can be examined up close. The exhibitions change regularly, so each visit tends to bring a different focus and different stories.
The museum sits outside the center of Birzeit and is most easily reached by private car or taxi. Inside, the building is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility, and outdoors there is a cafe and seating in the garden.
When the museum opened in 2016, it did so without a permanent collection in place, welcoming visitors for several months before the first full exhibition was ready. The terraces around the building are planted with olive trees, pomegranates, and herbs that reflect the traditional farming of this part of the region.
