Monastery of the Temptation Téléphérique

The cable car system to the Monastery of the Temptation is a transport facility that rises from Jericho up to the clifftop monastery, carrying visitors across an elevation gain of about 180 meters (590 feet). The journey crosses the slopes of the Judaean Desert and provides direct access to the monastic structure built into the mountainside.

The cable car was installed in 1998 and transformed access to a monastery built in the 6th century. This system made the religious site far more reachable after visitors had previously faced a grueling steep climb.

The cable car links ancient Jericho with the mountaintop monastery, allowing visitors to experience both biblical sites and Palestinian landscape together. The location holds deep religious meaning for pilgrims and believers from different faith traditions.

The cable car journey takes about five minutes and spares visitors a strenuous ninety-minute walk up the mountain. The system runs daily with regular departures from the Jericho terminal building.

The cable car transports passengers at one of Earth's lowest elevations while leading to a monastery carved directly into the rock face. This rare combination of extreme location and carved architecture makes the site particularly remarkable.
